Fresh Start Scholarship Fund                                 
Purpose:         

The Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) organization, is the charitable arm of Wilmington Women in Business, Inc. (WWB)*.  

WWB established the Fresh Start Scholarship Program in 1996 to provide financial incentive and mentoring assistance to a woman returning to school to improve her life and opportunities. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, disability, or national origin.

Eligibility:       

Candidates must:
* Be female.
* Be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
* Be at least 20 years of age and have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
* Have had at least a two year break in education either after completing high school or during post-secondary (college) studies.
* Be admitted to (or currently enrolled) in an accredited Delaware college in a two or four year degree program at the undergraduate level. (Students who have previously earned a bachelor’s degree are not eligible to apply.).
* Be recommended by a Social Service Agency (or if a Social Service Agency is not available, by a College Representative).
* Have at least a C average if currently enrolled in college.
* Certify financial need.
* Submit a completed application including a personal statement

Award:           

The number and amount of the awards will be determined annually prior to the fall semester but will in no event exceed the costs of tuition, fees, books and other direct educational expenses.   Awards will be paid to the college prior to the beginning of each semester.

DEADLINE: COMPLETED APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MAY 31 yearly.
Award Notification:  All applicants will be notified on or before July 31 yearly.

Lauren…goal was college while in high school, graduating at age 16…due to family problems, idea of college had to be put on the back burner…supported herself and then married, but the family finances did not support a college education for her…was employed full time in customer service…decided to leave employment for education in Social Work at Delaware State University but the financial struggle continues…looks forward to working in a career where she can direct her energies towards helping people.

Ester …raised four children for 16 years as a single parent and working an 11-7 shift…despite family commitments and financial challenges, continued to persevere to obtain an LPN Degree…older daughter was deployed to Iraq in 2004-05, which affected her physically and emotionally...was in and out of courses due to illness, fatigue, and lack of finances… accepted in RN Program at Delaware Technical and Community College in 2006…Fresh Start Scholarship will enable her to take a leave of absence from job and complete degree...says “not only can I help the sick, but at the same time, I can show love and compassion”.

Margo… started college right after high school as the first person in her family to pursue a college degree...  during second year, mother died so had to leave school to raise three younger siblings...later married and began raising her own family…educational goals and aspirations were put on hold as she maintained and provided a healthy home environment for her husband, their 4 children and her siblings…worked for 7 years in a low-paying position, then resigned to take a course in Hemodialysis and has worked as a technician in that field for the past 2 years…would like to progress further in the healthcare field so is now pursuing a BS in Nursing at Delaware State University while working three 10-hour days a week…“Having an education will allow me to reach out and help more people on many different levels”.
